I'm an Aptera fan and have been virtually watching the team compete on Twitter and on the official PIAXP website. I can attest to the fact that this 3 wheeled wonder has proven itself, and then some.
On Monday, July 26, 2010, Aptera successfully passed the final three driving events to become a "Finalist" in the Progressive Automotive XPRIZE competition. The vehicle completed and actually exceeded requirements set by Consumers Union and the Progressive Insurance Automotive XPRIZE officials during the 0-60 acceleration and 60-0 deceleration test events.
In city, urban, and highway fuel efficiency tests of 164.3 MPGe and a real world range of well over 100 miles, Aptera 2e proved that it is a very capable vehicle and the most energy efficient (side-by-side) passenger vehicle in the world.
Today, Aptera is competing in a combined performance/efficiency "race".
It looks like they may have had a couple of problems in this event, and as much as I winced when I first saw this, it also reminded me that the competition here is stiff and that anything the team achieves from this point forward is pure gravy. Of course, I'm sure the team wants to continue to win, but they should be VERY proud of what they have already accomplished.
Aptera is part of an efficient personal transportation revolution that we can all be proud of and I will continue to cheer them on. I'm behind any company that helps us take a step further in reducing carbon emissions, reducing our dependency on foreign oil and creating and keeping new jobs in the U.S. You can learn more about Aptera by visiting their official website.
