Bill Gross
Chief Executive Officer
Bill Gross
Bill Gross founded Idealab in March 1996 and serves as the company's Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. Bill founded Idealab to create and build successful businesses that capitalize on innovations in areas with significant growth opportunities, including the Internet.

A lifelong entrepreneur, Bill started several companies prior to Idealab. In high school, he founded Solar Devices, a firm that sold plans and kits for solar energy products. In college at the California Institute of Technology, he patented a new loudspeaker design and formed GNP Loudspeakers, Inc. After graduating from college, Bill and his brother Larry started GNP Development, Inc., which made a natural language product for Lotus 1-2-3 called HAL. In 1985, Lotus Development Corporation acquired GNP and Bill became a software entrepreneur at Lotus Development. In 1991, Bill started Knowledge Adventure, an educational software publisher that grew to be the third largest educational software publisher in the world and was eventually sold to Cendant Software and is now a division of Havas Interactive, which is owned by Vivendi.

Bill serves on the boards of directors of numerous companies. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology and of the Art Center College of Design. Bill received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

Marcia Goodstein
Chief Operating Officer and President
Marcia Goodstein
Marcia Goodstein founded Idealab with Bill Gross in March 1996 and since that time has been instrumental in the creation and development of dozens of Idealab network companies in industries ranging from clean tech and robotics to Internet search and retail to social media. Today Marcia is Idealab's Chief Operating Officer and President and currently serves on the boards of several Idealab operating companies. Prior to founding Idealab, Marcia was an early employee of Gemstar Development Corporation responsible for media licensing for North America, as well as marketing and distribution in South America. Prior to joining Gemstar, Marcia worked in a biology lab at the California Institute of Technology. She is a graduate of Pomona College.
Debbie Chen
General Counsel
Debbie Chen
Debbie Chen has served as Idealab's General Counsel since September 2012. She has been with Idealab since February 2000 and previously served as Assistant General Counsel. Prior to joining Idealab, Debbie was with the law firm of Latham & Watkins LLP. She is a former CPA and was with PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York as a Senior Accountant prior to attending law school. Debbie holds a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from the UCLA School of Law. She enjoys getting together with good friends, attending boot camp classes at the gym and capturing special family moments with photography.
Craig Chrisney

Craig Chrisney
Craig Chrisney has served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Idealab since August 2006. From February 2000 to August 2006 Craig served as Idealab's Vice President of Finance and Director of Financial Reporting. Prior to joining Idealab, Craig was with PricewaterhouseCoopers where he served most recently as an audit senior manager in PwC's Technology, Information, Communications and Entertainment practice. Craig holds a B.S. from California Polytechnic State University. He enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids and is an avid sports fan, especially when it comes to college football.
Kristen Ding
Vice President, Design
Kristen Ding
Kristen Ding has been with Idealab since February 1998, serving as our Vice President of Design. She first joined the Idealab family in 1995 as part of the founding team at CitySearch. Prior to that, Kristen served as Senior Art Director at AND Interactive Communications, designing prototypes for interactive television. She received her B.A. with a double major in Psychology and Design from Stanford University and her B.F.A. in Graphic Design and Packaging (with an emphasis in Interactive Multimedia) from Art Center College of Design. Kristen has been mentoring startups in the Launchpad LA accelerator program since 2012, and her work has been featured in ID, Communication Arts and HOW design magazines.

Kristen enjoys partnering with entrepreneurs and adding value to their companies through design. Her team works on Idealab's early-stage product ideas as well as with later-stage companies in all areas of user experience, visual communication, and branding. Outside of work, Kristen enjoys modern architecture, photography, and travel to places near and far with friends and family.
Wes Ferrari
Vice President, Information Technologies
Wes Ferrari
Wes brings to Idealab 20+ years of experience managing information systems and technologies. Just prior to joining the Idealab team in May 2000, Wes served as a Managing Director for IKON Office Solutions (NYSE), an outsourcing firm providing a broad spectrum of technology-related services to both large companies and entrepreneurial ventures. Until its acquisition by IKON, Wes was co-founder of Alliance Computer Group, a technology integration and professional services company specializing in high performance LAN/WAN design, network security and optimization and cloud hosting provisioning and management. Wes holds B.S. degrees in Biology and Anthropology from Loma Linda University, completed postgraduate work in computer engineering at UC San Diego and holds a M.B.A. from the Fisher School of International Business at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. When not spending his spare time restoring a 1917 Craftsman bungalow, Wes enjoys hiking and mountain biking in the San Gabriel mountains with his human (and canine) family.
Tom Hughes
Chief Design Officer
Tom Hughes
Tom Hughes founded Idealab with Bill Gross and Marcia Goodstein in 1996. Prior to working at Idealab, he worked with high-tech clients including IBM and Lotus on corporate and brand identity design and management as well as packaging systems and software interface design. Before starting his own design firm, he was picked by Steve Jobs to be Apple's worldwide creative director for Business Products. He was responsible for creating the Macintosh product identity and supporting its introduction in 1985. Following Apple, Lotus Development Corporation hired Tom to build an in-house design team to develop and support a new corporate identity and packaging system. Previously, he was Senior Art Director at Polaroid, working with its founder, Dr. Land, on corporate projects and product introductions. His work is included in the Smithsonian collection and has been internationally recognized. Awards include AIGA, Communications Arts Magazine, Print Magazine, and IDEA. When not at Idealab, Tom works with his daughter's non-profit organization, Swim to Empower, and is an Angel Flight volunteer.
Tom McGovern

Tom McGovern
Tom McGovern has served as Managing Director since January 2012 and sits on various private company boards. Prior to this most recent role, Tom held various CEO positions with Idealab operating companies Snap, Perfect Market and Petsmart.com. Tom joined the Idealab family in 1999 from Warner Bros. where most recently he was Senior Vice President of International Consumer Products. In 1996 Tom co-founded the Internet Mall, one of the Internet's earliest marketplaces which went public as Shopnow. Before Warner Bros., Tom was a management consultant with Management Horizons, a strategy consulting division of PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Tom started his career in the audit division of Price Waterhouse, earning his CPA while serving high technology clients in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tom holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School and a BS from the University of Colorado. Tom is an avid Bikram yogi, biker and as a father of two enjoys activities ranging from paintball to tea parties.

Tom Ngo
Chief Product Officer
Tom Ngo
As Chief Product Officer at Idealab, Tom leads a team responsible for de-risking all nascent company ideas until they obtain external funding and become operating companies. Prior to Idealab, Tom was Chief Product and Development Officer at Aventura, where he was responsible for all product-development functions. As Vice President, Disney Research, he co-led the research organization, focusing on alignment with business priorities of all business segments. As Chief Technology Officer at NextPage, he was responsible for product management, product design, and product development.

Prior to that, Tom held a senior management position at Interval Research Corporation – the R&D organization funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen – where he co-invented an efficient delivery mechanism for broadband media, ground-breaking techniques for synthetic computer animation and a physically compact device for implementing the famous cocktail-party effect. In each of these areas as well as his doctoral and undergraduate work, he either holds issued patents or has published papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Tom holds a Ph.D. in Computational Biophysics from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree in Physics from Cambridge University, where he graduated with first-class honors and received the first Sir Neville Mott prize for the best undergraduate thesis in theoretical physics. He has been elected to the vSpring Capital Top 100 Venture Entrepreneurs (v|100) since 2005, and was UITA CTO of the Year in 2004.
Tanya Peterson
Vice President, Human Resources
Tanya Peterson
Tanya Peterson is Vice President of Human Resources. She has been with Idealab since August 2000 and previously served as Director of Human Resources. Prior to joining us, Tanya was Human Resources Manager for Creative Channel Services. In addition, she held positions in human resources and operations for Global Sourcing Services, Cybersmith, and Barnes and Noble, Inc., all based in New York. Tanya received her B.A. in Business Administration from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. She holds the Certified Benefits Professional certification from WorldatWork, and is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management. When not at work, Tanya enjoys exploring California on weekend excursions with her husband, and visiting with family and friends during return trips to her home state of New York.
